In cell biology, a mitochondrion (plural mitochondria) is a membrane-enclosed organelle found in most eukaryotic cells. These organelles range from 0.5 to 1.0 micrometer (μm) in diameter. Mitochondria are sometimes described as "cellular power plants" because they generate most of the cell's supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), used as a source of chemical energy. In addition to supplying cellular energy, mitochondria are involved in a range of other processes, such as signaling, cellular differentiation, cell death, as well as the control of the cell cycle and cell growth. Mitochondria have been implicated in several human diseases, including mitochondrial disorders and cardiac dysfunction, and may play a role in the aging process. The word mitochondrion comes from the Greek μίτος mitos, thread, + χονδρίον chondrion, granule.

Ein Mitochondrium (auch Mitochondrion, Plural Mitochondrien, aus griech. mitos, für Faden und chondros für Korn) ist ein von einer Doppelmembran umschlossenes Organell mit eigener Erbsubstanz. Mitochondrien kommen in den Zellen fast aller Eukaryoten (Organismen, deren Zellen Zellkerne haben) vor. Bei wenigen einzelligen Eukaryoten sowie bei Prokaryoten kommen sie nicht vor. Mitochondrien fungieren als „Energiekraftwerke“, indem sie der Zelle das energiereiche Molekül Adenosintriphosphat zur Verfügung stellen.

Les mitochondries (du grec mitos, fil et chondros, grain) sont des structures intracellulaires (organites), dont la taille est de l'ordre du micromètre. Leur rôle physiologique est primordial, puisque c'est dans les mitochondries que l'énergie fournie par les molécules organiques est récupérée puis stockée sous forme d'ATP, la source principale d'énergie pour la cellule, par le processus de phosphorylation oxydative.

Mitokondrier är en typ av organeller i en cell, som finns i eukaryota celler. De har en viktig roll i ämnesomsättningen genom att tillverka Adenosintrifosfat (ATP), den molekyl som sedan används som energikälla i de flesta processerna i cellen. Här sker den aeroba metabolismen. Antalet mitokondrier i en cell varierar kraftigt beroende på celltyp. Mänskliga leverceller kan innehålla flera tusen. Det förekommer särskilt många mitokondrier i celler med intensiv andning till exempel hjärta, njurar och rotspetsar.

Mitochondrium (w liczbie mnogiej Mitochondria) – organellum komórki eukariotycznej pochodzenia endosymbiotycznego, w którym zachodzą procesy będące głównym źródłem energii (w postaci ATP) dla komórki, w szczególności proces fosforylacji oksydacyjnej, zachodzący w błonie wewnętrznej mitochondriów.
