Midfield is the part of a sports pitch that lies approximately in the center. It is a term most commonly associated with football to refer to the area in and around the center circle, as well as the players who occupy that region, but it can be used in field hockey to describe the same area, or in rugby to refer to the area occupied by the players in the center positions. The term "midfield" is also used in baseball to describe the area between the infield and the outfield.

Een middenvelder is een voetballer die tussen de verdedigers en de aanvallers in speelt. Er wordt gezegd dat het daarom de voetballers zijn die zich het meeste bewegen en dan ook sneller vermoeid raken. Een middenvelder kan aanvallend en verdedigend spelen. Vaak wordt het middenveld gezien als de spil van het spel. Als je het middenveld beheerst heb je de meeste kans om te winnen.

O meio-campo ou meio-de-campo é o aspecto central do gramada do futebol. Nesta área, os meio-campistas desempenham funções de ligar a defesa ao ataque durante a parte e evitar golpes de adversários. Uma curiosidade é que na língua espanhola, todos os participantes desta área são denominados volantes.
