In grammar, the voice of a verb describes the relationship between the action (or state) that the verb expresses and the participants identified by its arguments (subject, object, etc.). When the subject is the agent or actor of the verb, the verb is in the active voice. When the subject is the patient, target or undergoer of the action, it is said to be in the passive voice.

Le terme de diathèse s'utilise en linguistique pour désigner ce que l'on entend plus communément par « voix » verbale. C'est un trait grammatical décrivant comment s'organisent les rôles sémantiques dévolus aux actants par rapport au procès verbal ; elle considère surtout comment sont répartis ceux d'acteur du procès verbal et de patient (le cas échéant). Changer la diathèse d'un verbe quand l'opération est possible ne doit pas modifier profondément le sens de l'énoncé. Le terme de voix est réservé à la morphologie verbale : il décrit la forme que prend le verbe pour signifier une diathèse.

Die Diathese (griechisch διάθεσις „Aufstellung, Zustand“, auch Handlungsrichtung) ist in der Sprachwissenschaft die Bezeichnung für eine morphologische Kategorie des Verbs. Die verschiedenen Diathesen werden nach ihrer Bedeutung, also nach semantischen Kriterien unterschieden. Dabei geht es um die Umsetzung semantischer Rollen, vor allem Agens (derjenige Mitspieler, der aktiv handelt) und Patiens  (derjenige Mitspieler, der etwas erleidet oder dem etwas widerfährt) in die syntaktische Struktur eines Satzes in einer gegebenen Sprache. In den bekannteren europäischen Sprachen (auch dem Deutschen) sind die wichtigsten Diathesen Aktiv und Passiv (siehe Beispiel). In typologisch andersartigen Sprachen können aufgrund einer anderen syntaktischen Ausrichtung andere Diathesen dominieren, z.B. das Antipassiv in Ergativsprachen.

態（たい、英 voice）は、言語学の用語で、動詞に表現されている出来事をどの視点に立って見るかを区別する形式を指す。一般に能動態・受動態と呼ばれるものがこれにあたる。このほか、一部の言語で見られる中動態や、能格言語にみられる逆受動態などがある。使役・可能などの表現もしばしば態に含められる。態の現象のうち、多くの言語に存在し最もよく知られているものは受動態であり、これは能動態における直接目的語ないし間接目的語を主語に昇格し、本来の主語を隠す働きをする。日本語については受身と呼ばれることが多い。なお、かつて古典語の文法ではvoiceを「相」と訳しているものが多かったが、現代ではvoiceの訳としては態をあて、相はアスペクトにあてるのが一般的である。
