The middle ear is the portion of the ear internal to the eardrum, and external to the oval window of the cochlea. The mammalian middle ear contains three ossicles, which couple vibration of the eardrum into waves in the fluid and membranes of the inner ear. The hollow space of the middle ear has also been called the tympanic cavity, or cavum tympani. The eustachian tube joins the tympanic cavity with the nasal cavity (nasopharynx), allowing pressure to equalize between the inner ear and throat.

L'oreille moyenne comprend le tympan (tympanum), ainsi que les osselets (la « chaîne ossiculaire »), trois très petits os. Ils s'appellent respectivement le marteau (maleus), l'enclume (incus) et l'étrier (stapes, qui est le plus petit os du corps humain). Ces noms proviennent de leurs formes caractéristiques. Le marteau et l'enclume forment une articulation peu flexible appelée bloc incudo-maléaire.

Das Mittelohr (lat.: Auris media) ist Bestandteil des Ohres des Menschen, aber auch der anderen landlebenden Wirbeltiere. Es besteht aus einer Höhle, die sich an den beiden Seiten des Schädels befindet. Diese Paukenhöhle (Cavum tympani) entsteht embryonal aus der ersten Schlundtasche. Sie ist mit Luft gefüllt und mit einer Schleimhaut ausgekleidet, die fest mit der Knochenhaut (Periost) verbunden ist. Über die Eustachische Röhre (Ohrtrompete) ist das Mittelohr mit dem Rachenraum verbunden. Über die Eustachische Röhre findet ein Druckausgleich gegenüber der Außenwelt statt.

Ucho to narząd słuchu i równowagi występujący jedynie u kręgowców. Najbardziej złożone i rozwinięte uszy występują u ssaków. Ucho odbiera fale dźwiękowe, przekształca je w drgania mechaniczne, a drgania w impulsy nerwowe. Odpowiada także za zmysł równowagi (błędnik).

L'Orecchio medio è una cavità compresa tra le tre ossa che formano l'osso temporale, tra il condotto uditivo esterno e l'orecchio interno.Questa cavità, detta Cassa del Timpano, contiene tre piccoli ossicini disposti regolarmente in modo da formare la Catena degli Ossicini dell'udito. La Cassa del Timpano comunica con la faringe attraverso la Tromba di Eustachio. La mucosa faringea (Mucosa timpanica) continua lungo questo canale fino alla cassa timpanica tappezzando tutte le pareti.
