The metric system is an international decimalised system of measurement that was originally based on the mètre des archives and the kilogramme des archives introduced by France in 1799. Over the years, the definitions of the metre and kilogram have been refined and the metric system extended to incorporate many more units. Although a number of variants of the metric system emerged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the term is now often used as a synonym for the "International System of Units" - the official system of measurement in almost every country in the world.

Ein metrisches Einheitensystem, kurz metrisches System, ist ein Einheitensystem mit dem Meter oder einem dezimalen Vielfachen davon als einer seiner Basiseinheiten. Beispiele sind das SI sowie das cgs- und das mks-System.

Metersystemet kallas det decimalsystem för mått och vikt som är grundat på metern som enhet. Metersystemet introducerades i Frankrike efter revolutionen 1789 och infördes i Sverige 1878. Systemet har utvecklats till det internationella enhetssystemet, SI.

На протяжении двух последних веков существовали различные варианты метрической системы, различающиеся выбором основных единиц. В настоящее время международно признанной является система СИ. При некоторых различиях в деталях, элементы системы одинаковы во всем мире. Метрические единицы широко используются по всему миру как в научных целях, так и в повседневной жизни.
