Butanone is a manufactured organic chemical. It is a colorless liquid with a sharp, sweet odor. It is a ketone, also known as methyl ethyl ketone (MEK).Butanone is produced in large quantities. Nearly half of it is used in paints and other coatings because it will quickly evaporate. It dissolves many substances and is used as a solvent in processes involving gums, resins, cellulose acetate and nitrocellulose coatings and in vinyl films. It is also used in the synthetic rubber industry, It is used in manufacturing plastics, textiles , in the production of paraffin wax and in household products such as lacquer, varnishes, paint remover, a denaturing agent for denatured alcohol, glues and as a cleaning agent. It is used for synthesis of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, a catalyst for some polymerization reactions. It is highly flammable. It is not considered a large health threat.

メチルエチルケトン (methyl ethyl ketone、MEK) はケトンに分類される有機溶媒の一種。示性式は CH3COC2H5、IUPAC命名法では 2-ブタノン (2-butanone)、もしくはエチルメチルケトン (ethyl methyl ketone) と表される。 消防法による危険物（第四類 引火性液体、第一石油類）に指定されている有機化学物質。引火点 −9 ℃、沸点 79.5 ℃、発火点 404 ℃。 無色の液体で、特異な匂いがある。水にかなり溶けるが、水との混合物は均一な外観を維持しない。塗料溶剤や合成樹脂の原料となる。メチルエチルケトンの 2004年度日本国内生産量は 265,232t、工業消費量は 37t である。
