Methodology is defined as "the analysis of the principles of methods, rules, and postulates employed by a discipline" or"the development of methods, to be applied within a discipline""a particular procedure or set of procedures". . It should be noted that methodology is frequently used when method would be more accurate. For example, "Since students were not available to complete the survey about academic success, we changed our methodology and gathered data from instructors instead". In this instance the methodology (gathering data via surveys, and the assumption that this produces accurate results) did not change, but the method (asking teachers instead of students) did.

Alors, la méthodologie est une classe de méthodes, une sorte de boite à outils où chaque outil est une méthode de la même catégorie, comme il y une méthodologie analytique du déterminisme causal et une méthodologie systémique finaliste de la téléologie.

Methodologie is de studie van de wetenschappelijke methoden, de procedures en werkwijzen, die moeten worden gebruikt om kennis te verwerven en om de wetenschap vooruit te helpen. Elke vakdiscipline heeft eigen methoden en technieken en vaak ook een specifieke organisatie met onderzoekers, leerstoelen en vakliteratuur, waar deze specifieke methodologie wordt bestudeerd. Er zijn ook algemene methoden, technieken en principes die voor alle wetenschappen gelden, en deze beginselen worden bestudeerd in de wetenschapsfilosofie.
