Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy concerned with explaining the fundamental nature of being and the world, although the term is not easily defined. Traditionally, metaphysics attempts to answer two basic questions in the broadest possible terms:

1. "What is there?"
2. "What is it like?"

Metafizyka klasyczna albo filozofia pierwsza (gr. τα μετα τα φυσικά ta meta ta physika - "to, co po fizyce/ponad fizyką"; zob. ontologia) - dziedzina wiedzy ukonstytuowana przez Arystotelesa, rozważająca byt jako byt oraz jego istotne własności i ostateczne przyczyny (por.
