It is called ume (kanji: ; hiragana: ) in Japanese, méi () or méizi () in Chinese, maesil (hangul: 매실; hanja: ) in Korean, and mai in Vietnamese. The tree originates from China, and was brought to Japan and Korea later. The tree is cultivated for its fruit and flowers. Although normally called a plum, it is actually more closely related to the apricot. Another species commonly referred to as the "Japanese plum" is the sumomo (Prunus salicina).

L'abricotier du Japon, mume, ume ou umé (Prunus mume (Sieb.) Sieb. et Zucc.) est un arbre fruitier rustique aux feuilles caduques rattaché à la vaste famille des Rosaceae, qui peut être considéré comme intermédiaire entre le prunier et l'abricotier. Ce dernier est, en réalité, originaire de Chine et fût importé plus tard au Japon et en Corée. Il est en fait beaucoup plus proche de la famille des abricotiers que des pruniers.

Ume (Prunus mume) (梅) ist eine asiatische Art aus der Gattung der  Prunus. Der Baum stammt aus China (wo er méi (梅) heißt), er wuchs jedoch schon in alten Zeiten in Japan und Korea (maesil). Der Baum wird für seine Früchte und Blüten kultiviert. Obwohl er oft als Pflaume bezeichnet wird, ist er eigentlich eher mit der Aprikose verwandt. Eine andere oft als „Japanische Pflaume“ bezeichnete Art ist die Sumomo (P. salicina).

Mei (Mei long) – teropod z rodziny troodonów.Żył w okresie wczesnej kredy (ok. 140 mln lat temu) na terenach wschodniej Azji. Długość ciała ok. 53 cm. Jego szczątki znaleziono w 2004 r. Chinach, (prowincja Liaoning).Odkryta skamieniałość przedstawia tego dinozaura prawdopodobnie w czasie snu (Mei long znaczy "zdrowo śpiący smok"). Być może zginął w czasie erupcji wulkanu, przysypany gorącym popiołem wulkanicznym. Do ostatniej drzemki ułożył się z tylnymi kończynami podwiniętymi pod ciało, głowę wtykając pod przednią kończynę i owijając się ogonem. Podobnie wyglądają śpiące ptaki, chowając głowę pod skrzydłami (dzięki temu tracą mniej ciepła). Pozycja podobna do ptasiej może wskazywać na to, iż dany gatunek mógł być stałocieplny.
