Note: The term model has a different meaning in model theory, a branch of mathematical logic. An artifact which is used to illustrate a mathematical idea is also called a mathematical model and this usage is the reverse of the sense explained below. A mathematical model is an abstract model that uses mathematical language to describe the behaviour of a system. Mathematical models are used particularly in the natural sciences and engineering disciplines (such as physicsbiology, and electrical engineering) but also in the social sciences (such as economicssociology and political science); physicistsengineerscomputer scientists, and economists use mathematical models most extensively.
