Mathematics (from Greek μάθημα máthēma, “knowledge, study, learning”) is the study of quantity, structure, space, and change.  Mathematicians seek out patterns and formulate new conjectures. Mathematicians resolve the truth or falsity of conjectures by mathematical proof. The research required to solve mathematical problems can take years or even centuries of sustained inquiry. Since the pioneering work of Giuseppe Peano (1858–1932), David Hilbert (1862–1943), and others on axiomatic systems in the late 19th century, it has become customary to view mathematical research as establishing truth by rigorous deduction from appropriately chosen axioms and definitions. When those mathematical structures are good models of real phenomena, then mathematical reasoning often provides insight or predictions.

Die Mathematik (altgriechisch mathematike [téchne] ‚die Kunst des Lernens, zum Lernen gehörig‘ und mantháno ‚ich lerne‘, umgangssprachlich Mathe) ist die Wissenschaft, welche aus der Untersuchung von Figuren und dem Rechnen mit Zahlen entstand. Für Mathematik gibt es keine allgemein anerkannte Definition; heute wird sie üblicherweise als eine Wissenschaft, die selbst geschaffene abstrakte Strukturen auf ihre Eigenschaften und Muster untersucht, beschrieben.

Les mathématiques constituent un domaine de connaissances abstraites construites à l'aide de raisonnements logiques sur des concepts tels que les nombres, les figures, les structures et les transformations. Les mathématiques désignent aussi le domaine de recherche visant à développer ces connaissances, ainsi que la discipline qui les enseigne.

Matematik (av grekiska máthema, "vetenskap") är läran om abstrakta kvantiteter, strukturer och mönster. Matematiken består av metoder för att beskriva och analysera abstrakta samband, och kunskap i form av redan härledda resultat. Viktiga områden är aritmetik, talteori, algebra, analys, geometri, topologi, mängdteori och statistik, bland många andra.

Matematyka (gr. mathēmatik z máthēma – poznanie, umiejętność) – nauka skupiona na rozumowaniu dedukcyjnym, czyli dostarczająca narzędzi do badania wniosków z przyjętych założeń. Ponieważ ścisłe założenia mogą dotyczyć najróżniejszych dziedzin myśli ludzkiej, a muszą być czynione w naukach ścisłych, technice a nawet w naukach humanistycznych, zakres matematyki jest szeroki i stale się powiększa.
