Yerba mate
This article is about the plant, for the drink see mate (beverage). Yerba mate / Erva-mate*, Ilex paraguariensis, is a species of holly (family Aquifoliaceae) native to subtropical South America in Argentina, eastern Paraguay, western Uruguay and southern Brazil. The yerba mate plant is a shrub or small tree growing up to 15 meters tall. The leaves are evergreen, 7–11 cm long and 3–5.5 cm wide, with a serrated margin. The  flowers are small, greenish-white, with four petals. The fruit is a red berry 4–6 mm diameter.

Występuje w stanie dzikim w Ameryce Południowej, między 12 a 33° szer. geogr. pd.Nazwę (Ilex paraguarensis) tej roślinie nadał francuski botanik Auguste de Saint Hilaire w 1822 roku.

In spagnolo si chiama Mate (chimarrão in portoghese) l'infusione preparata con le foglie di erba Mate (in spagnolo yerba Mate o semplicemente yerba; erva Mate in portoghese), una pianta originaria del Sud America. Seguendo lo stesso procedimento del , la yerba Mate è essiccata, tagliata e sminuzzata. Tradizionalmente questa infusione si beve calda e in compagnia.
