mass transit

Public transport, public transportation, public transit or mass transit comprise all transport systems in which the passengers do not travel in their own vehicles. While the above terms are generally taken to include rail and bus services, wider definitions might include scheduled airline services, ferries, taxicab services etc. — any system that transports members of the general public. A further restriction that is sometimes applied is that transit should occur in continuously shared vehicles, which would exclude taxis that are not shared-ride taxis.

A rapid transit, underground, subway, elevated or metro(politan) system is a railway — usually in an urban area—with a high capacity and frequency of service and grade separation from other traffic. In most of the world, these systems are known as a "Metro." In London, the system is called the "Underground," in Buenos Aires "Subte," and in most of North America and in Glasgow, Scotland, "subway." The oldest rapid transit system in the world is the London Underground, which opened in 1863.

Metro to potoczne określenie (wywodzące się od ang. Metropolitan Railway) szybkiej kolei miejskiej z niezależnym, całkowicie lub częściowo podziemnym korytarzem. Metro jest koleją elektryczną zdolną przewozić duże potoki pasażerów. Charakteryzuje się wagonami rozwijającymi wysoką prędkość i osiągającymi duże przyspieszenia, jeżdżącymi pojedynczo lub w układach wielowagonowych na oddzielnych torach, korytarzami wydzielonymi od pojazdów innego typu ruchu i od ruchu pieszego, specjalną sygnalizacją, oraz wysokimi peronami. W 15 starych krajach UE istnieje obecnie przeszło 30 systemów metra, a ostatnie inwestycje to systemy w: Tuluzie (1993), Neapolu (1995), Bilbao (1997), Atenach (1998), Katanii (1999), Kopenhadze (październik 2002), Porto (grudzień 2002) i Turynie (2005).

Con l'espressione Il caso Mass Transit si indica nel mondo del wrestling un incidente accaduto il 23 novembre del 1996 a Revere, Massachusetts, durante un match svoltosi nel corso di uno show della Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW).Un aspirante wrestler di 158,7 kg di nome Eric Kulas convinse l'allora presidente e booker della federazione Paul Heyman a farlo combattere con lo pseudonimo di Mass Transit in un tag team match assieme a D-Von Dudley contro "The Gangstas" (New Jack e Mustapha Saed); Kulas prese il posto del wrestler Axl Rotten, il quale avrebbe dovuto prendere parte al match ma che non si presentò quando fu il momento di disputare l'incontro (no show). Il match si svolse nel corso di un house show organizzato a Revere.
