The masque was a form of festive  courtly entertainment which flourished in 16th and early 17th century Europe, though it was developed earlier in Italy, in forms including the intermedio (a public version of the masque was the pageant). A masque involved music and dancing, singing and acting, within an elaborate stage design, in which the architectural framing and costumes might be designed by a renowned architect, to present a deferential allegory flattering to the patron. Professional actors and musicians were hired for the speaking and singing parts. Often, the masquers who did not speak or sing were courtiers: King James I's queen consort, Anne of Denmark, frequently danced with her ladies in masques between 1603 and 1611, and Henry VIII and Charles I performed in the masques at their courts. In the tradition of masque, Louis XIV danced in ballets at Versailles with music by Jean-Baptiste Lully.

Die englische Masque ist ein höfisches Maskenspiel des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts und ein direkter Vorfahr der barocken Oper in England.

Maskenspiele waren im Europa der Renaissance und vor allem in der italienischen Frührenaissance eine Form der theatralischen wie auch zunächst volkstümlichen Unterhaltung.

Un masque est un dispositif se plaçant devant le visage, il peut avoir plusieurs fonctions :

• Cacher le visage du regard des autres, ne pas être reconnu ou pour en cacher une partie ;
• Symboliser un personnage autre que le porteur de masque, une émotion ;
• Protéger le visage des agressions, (masque de soudeur), ou au contraire empècher la diffusion des expectorations, (masque de chirurgie) ; il s'agit alors d'un équipement de protection individuelle, voir aussi l'article Visière.

Masque (maska) - typowo angielska forma muzyczna, odpowiednik włoskiej opery, jednak mniej sformalizowany i cechujący się większą naturalnością. Od opery różni się też brakiem wyraźniejszego podziału na arie i recytatywy i wysoce prowizoryczną treścią.
