Mashie-niblick is an old
golf club used over a 100 years ago that resembled the today's 7-iron. It was originally crafted out of
wood, but the later versions were made of
iron. It had a 41 degree loft, which is equal to today's 7-iron, but the length of the club was closer to today's 9-iron. The name comes from the old golf-club naming convention according to which today's 3-iron to 6-iron were called 'mashies', and 8-iron and 9-irons were called 'niblicks' (wedges). The mashie-niblick was an in-between club, and hence the name, and was often used as the 'trouble club', a club used to escape from tough lies.
