masakari

The masakari (鉞) is an ancient Japanese weapon. This battle-axe was used by the Yamabushi, the warrior monks. The blade is made of heavy metal with a spike opposite which is attached to the wooden haft through the means of a socket. The masakari has a weight of 4 kg and is 120 cm long.Other Uses: "Masakari" is also the name of an 85-ton assault mech in the Battletech universe.

Il masakari (鉞) è una grossa ascia giapponese da guerra ad un solo taglio, per certi aspetti analoga a modelli cinesi di grosse dimensioni. Un'altra denominazione classica è fuetsu (斧鉞). L'arte che ne trasmette l'uso in battaglia faceva parte di alcune tradizioni di bujutsu, tuttavia a partire dall'epoca Heian quest'arma fu gradualmente abbandonata in favore di altre più maneggevoli e utili nelle grandi battaglie campali. Rimase così per lo più relegata nelle dimore o nei templi, come arma da difesa o simbolica.
