marsh

In geography, a marsh, or morass, is a type of wetland which is subject to frequent or continuous inundation. Typically a marsh features grasses, rushes, reeds, typhas, sedges, and other herbaceous plants (possibly with low-growing woody plants) in a context of shallow water. A marsh is different from a swamp, which has a greater proportion of open water surface, and is generally deeper than a marsh. In North America, the term swamp is used for wetland dominated by trees rather than grasses and low herbs.

Bagno -, obszar o utrzymującym się nadmiernym nawilgoceniu, porośnięty przez roślinność przystosowaną do specyficznych warunków związanych z dużym nawilgoceniem. Bagna bardzo często tworzą się w zagłębieniach terenu we wszystkich strefach klimatycznych świata. Największe przestrzenie zajmują jednak na obszarach pokrytych wieczną zmarzliną (Syberia, północna Kanada) i w strefie równikowej. Poza tym tworzą się w dolinach i deltach dużych rzek, na pojezierzach, na płaskich obszarach bezodpływowych, w nieckach krasowych, w odciętych zatokach morskich i nad brzegami mórz i oceanów. W bagnach w wyniku procesów utleniania związków organicznych tworzy się torf. Nauka zajmująca się badaniem genezy i funkcjonowania bagien to paludologia.

La carriera Nacque a Lockport, New York, frequentò il college di Yale e studiò geologia e mineralogia a New Haven. Successivamente si trasferì a Berlino, e poi a Heidelberg e a Breslau per studiare paleontologia e anatomia. Ritornò negli Stati Uniti nel 1866 e divenne professore di paleontologia dei vertebrati all'Università di Yale. Convinse suo zio, George Peabody, a creare un museo di storia naturale, il Peabody Museum. Nel maggio del 1871 Marsh scoprì i primi fossili di pterosauro in Nordamerica. Scoprì anche resti di cavalli primitivi, e successivamente descrisse i fossili di uccelli dentati del Cretaceo (come Ichthyornis e Hesperornis), rettili volanti, mammiferi estinti e dinosauri (tra cui Allosaurus e Brontosaurus / Apatosaurus).
