The manticore (Early Middle Persian Martyaxwar) is a persian legendary creature similar to the Egyptian sphinx. It has the body of a red lion, a human head with three rows of sharp teeth (like a shark), and a trumpet-like voice. Other aspects of the creature vary from story to story. It may be horned, winged, or both. The tail is that of either a dragon or a scorpion, and it may shoot poisonous spines to either paralyze or kill its victims. It devours its prey whole and leaves no clothes, bones, or possessions of the prey behind.

Der Mantikor (auch: Manticor, Manticore, Manticora, Martichoras) ist ein griechisch-persisches Fabelwesen.

La manticore est une créature fantastique ayant le corps d'un lion (parfois à fourrure rouge), la tête d'un humain (souvent avec des cornes, des yeux bleus et trois rangées de dents), et une queue de scorpion ou de dragon, parfois dotée d'ailes de chauve-souris, capable de lancer des dards venimeux pour immobiliser sa proie. Son venin peut servir à différentes fins, telle endormir, rendre malade, contrôler, maudire... ou même tuer. Sa taille varie entre celle d'un lion et celle d'un cheval.

Mantikora (grek. μαντιχώρας, mantichōras), legendariskt människoätande monster med ett lejons kropp, en mans ansikte och antingen en drakes eller en skorpions svans. Dess mun ska ha bestått av käkar med tre rader tänder och dess svans kunde skjuta iväg sin gifttagg mot offret. Mantikoran beskrivs av grekiska geografer och naturhistoriker, och bodde enligt dessa i Indien. Antagligen baserar sig mantikoran på förvrängda beskrivningar av den kaspiska tigern. I medeltida litteratur symboliserar mantikoran djävulen, ibland har den kvinnliga attribut.

Według legend ogon mantykory zawierać miał silną truciznę, która zabijała w kilka chwil. Atakowała nim z zasadzki i pożerała zabitych ludzi w całości. Postać mantykory pojawia się w grach komputerowych, takich jak serie: Age of Wonders, Archon, Disciples, Heroes of Might and Magic i w serii książek, gier i filmów o Harrym Potterze.
