Magnetic tape is a medium for magnetic recording generally consisting of a thin magnetizable coating on a long and narrow strip of plastic. Nearly all recording tape is of this type, whether used for recording audio or video or for computer data storage. It was originally developed in Germany, based on the concept of magnetic wire recording. Devices that record and playback audio and video using magnetic tape are generally called tape recorders and video tape recorders respectively. A device that stores computer data on magnetic tape can be called a tape drive, a tape unit, or a streamer.

La bande magnétique (ou ruban magnétique) est un support permettant l'enregistrement d'informations analogiques ou numériques à l'aide d'un magnétophone. On y lit les informations en mesurant la polarisation de particules magnétiques (oxyde de fer) incluse dans un substrat souple. On y écrit en modifiant cette orientation.

Ein Magnetband ist ein Speichermedium. Es besteht aus einer langen, schmalen Kunststofffolie, die mit einem magnetisierbaren Material beschichtet ist. Häufig ist auch die Rückseite beschichtet (Rückseitenmattierung), um freitragende Bandwickel zu ermöglichen. Früher gab es auch beschichtetes Papier und Band aus homogenem magnetischen Material. Das heutige Magnetband ist eine Entwicklung der AEG und der I.G. Farben (BASF) in den Jahren 1935 bis 1940.

Taśma magnetyczna - jest rodzajem nośnika danych w postaci paska taśmy z tworzywa sztucznego. Zapis i odczyt taśmy wykorzystuje ferromagnetyzm - taśma pokryta jest granulkami materiału ferromagnetycznego (najczęściej tlenki żelaza i chromu). Podczas zapisu głowica elektromagnetyczna za pomocą "silnego" pola ustawia domeny magnetyczne ("namagnesowuje") taśmę, a podczas odczytu wychwytuje zmiany pola spowodowane różnym namagnesowaniem taśmy. Technologia taśm może wydawać się przestarzała, jednak jest to nieprawda - obecnie najbardziej pojemnym nośnikiem danych są wciąż taśmy magnetyczne w streamerach. Jest to spowodowane tym, że taśma po zwinięciu na szpulę ma ogromną gęstość objętościową zapisu danych (na jednej szpuli może być kilometr taśmy).

Il nastro magnetico è un supporto destinato alla memorizzazione di dati che consiste in una sottile striscia in materiale plastico, rivestita di un materiale magnetizzabile. Praticamente tutti i nastri registrabili sono fatti utilizzando lo stesso tipo di tecnologia, siano essi utilizzati per il settore video ad esempio con un videoregistratore, per l'audio, con nastro in bobine, musicassette, Digital Audio Tape (DAT), Digital Linear Tape (DLT) e altri formati tra cui le vecchie cartucce a 8 tracce. L'altro immenso campo applicativo della tecnologia di registrazione su nastro magnetico, prevalentemente utilizzato con dati in formato digitale, riguarda il computer e l'informatica in genere, dove si è passati dall'impiego della già citata musicassetta degli anni '80 sui primi home computer al DAT, usato per il backup su server e workstation degli anni 1990.
