Metre
The metre (meter in the US), symbol m, is the base unit of length in the International System of Units (SI). Originally intended to be one ten-millionth of the distance from the Earth's equator to the North Pole (at sea level), its definition has been periodically refined to reflect growing knowledge of metrology. Since 1983, it has been defined as "the length of the path travelled by light in vacuum during a time interval of of a second".

Der oder das Meter (gr. métron „Maß“) ist die SI-Basiseinheit der Länge. Das Einheitenzeichen des Meters ist der Kleinbuchstabe „m“. Für dezimale Vielfache und Teile des Meters gelten die internationalen Vorsätze für Maßeinheiten.

Le mètre (symbole m, du grec metron, mesure) est l'unité de base de longueur du Système international (SI). Il est défini comme la distance parcourue par la lumière dans le vide en 1/299 792 458 seconde.

Metr to jednostka podstawowa długości w układach: SI, MKS, MKSA, MTS, oznaczenie m. W myśl definicji zatwierdzonej przez XVII Generalną Konferencję Miar i Wag w 1983 jest to odległość, jaką pokonuje światło w próżni w czasie 1/299 792 458 s.
Poprzednio metr zdefiniowany był jako:
- (1795 - 1889) długość równa 10-7 długości mierzonej wzdłuż południka paryskiego od równika do bieguna. Na podstawie tej definicji wykonano platynoirydowy wzorzec metra. W trakcie powtórnych pomiarów stwierdzono różnice między wzorcem a definicją. Wzorzec przechowywany jest w Międzynarodowym Biurze Miar i Wag w Sèvres koło Paryża).
- (1889 - 1960) I Generalna Konferencja Miar (1889) określiła metr jako odległość między odpowiednimi kreskami na wzorcu, równą 0,999914 · 10-7 połowy południka ziemskiego.
- (1960 - 1983) XI Generalna Konferencja Miar (1960) zdefiniowała metr jako długość równą 1 659 763,73 długości fali promieniowania w próżni odpowiadającego przejściu między poziomami 2p10 a 5d5 atomu 86Kr (kryptonu 86).
