The lymphatic system is a part of the circulatory system, comprising a network of conduits called lymphatic vessels that carry a clear fluid called  lymph (from Latin lympha "water goddess") unidirectionally towards the heart. The lymphatic system was first described independently by Olaus Rudbeck and Thomas Bartholin. The lymph system is not a closed system. The circulatory system processes an average of 20 liters of blood per day through capillary filtration which removes plasma while leaving the blood cells. Roughly 17 liters per day of that gets reabsorbed directly into the blood vessels. The primary function of the lymph system is to provide an accessory route for these excess 3 liters per day to get returned to the blood. So lymph is essentially recycled blood plasma.

Das Lymphatische System (lat. Systema lymphaticum, auch Lymphsystem) (Lymphe = Körperwasser, zu griech. lymphe: klares Wasser) ist ein Teil des Abwehrsystems (Immunsystem) der Wirbeltiere gegen Krankheitserreger, Fremdpartikel und krankhaft veränderte Körperbestandteile (z. B. Tumorzellen). Es gliedert sich in die lymphatischen Organe und das Lymphgefäßsystem. Das Lymphgefäßsystem hat neben der Funktion im Abwehrsystem auch eine Bedeutung im Flüssigkeitstransport und steht in enger Beziehung zum Blutkreislauf.

Le système lymphatique (ou réseau lymphatique) est constitué de l'ensemble fonctionnel des vaisseaux lymphatiques, des ganglions lymphatiques, des MALT, de la moelle osseuse, ainsi que d'organes tels que la rate, le thymus qui permettent la circulation et le renouvellement de la lymphe. Ces tissus font partie du tissu lymphoïde à l'exception de la moelle osseuse.

Det lymfatiska systemet eller lymfsystemet är ett system hos människan och andra däggdjur, bestående av lymfan, lymfkärlen och ett flertal organ. Det lymfatiska systemets funktion är dels dränering av vävnaderna, så att vätska som läcker ut ur blodkärlen leds tillbaka till blodet, dels har den uppgifter i kroppens immunförsvar.

Układ limfatyczny lub inaczej układ chłonny – otwarty układ naczyń i przewodów, którymi płynie jeden z płynów ustrojowych – limfa, która bierze swój początek ze śródmiąższowego przesączu znajdującego się w tkankach. Układ naczyń chłonnych połączony jest z układem krążenia krwi. Oprócz układu naczyń chłonnych w skład układu limfatycznego wchodzą także narządy i tkanki limfatyczne. Najważniejszą funkcją układu chłonnego jest obrona przed zakażeniami oraz cyrkulacja płynów ustrojowych.
