A lymph node is a small ball or an oval-shaped organ of the immune system, distributed widely throughout the body including the armpit and stomach and linked by lymphatic vessels. Lymph nodes are garrisons of B, T and other immune cells. Lymph nodes act as filters or traps for foreign particles and are important in the proper functioning of the immune system. They are packed tightly with the white blood cells called lymphocytes and macrophages.

Ein Lymphknoten (Nodus lymphaticus oder Lymphonodus, Abk. Nl., Nd. (Singular)/ Nll., Ndd. (Plural) oder Ln.) ist eine „Filterstation“ für die Lymphe (Gewebswasser) und gehört zum Lymphsystem. Jeder Lymphknoten ist für die Aufnahme und Filtration der Lymphe einer Körperregion zuständig. Dieses gefilterte Areal wird tributäres Gebiet genannt, der Lymphknoten ist der regionäre Lymphknoten dieses Gebiets.

Les ganglions lymphatiques ou nœuds lymphatiques sont le lieu de prolifération et de différenciation des cellules immunitaires, en fait le rôle des vaisseaux lymphatiques est d'amener un antigène (dans la grande majorité des cas issus d'un pathogène), du tissu jusqu'aux ganglions, ceci permet d'activer la réponse immunitaire spécifique en activant les lymphocytes T et B. Ils ont une forme réniforme et leur taille varie en fonction de leur localisation.

Lymfknutor finns utspridda längs hela lymfatiska systemet. Ansamlingar av dessa finns under armarna, i ljumskarna, i halsen, i bröstet och i magen. Deras inre består av porös bindväv späckad med lymfocyter som samlar in och förstör bakterier och virus. När kroppen bekämpar en infektion förökar sig dessa lymfocyter snabbt, och lymfknutorna blir svullna. Ungefär 25 miljarder lymfocyter vandrar genom varje lymfknuta per dag.

Węzły chłonne (limfatyczne) - leżą na przebiegu naczyń limfatycznych. Największe z nich to węzły: podżuchwowe, przyuszne, pachowe, pachwinowe. Grupują się w większe skupienia, w pewnych okolicznościach. Budową przypominają gęstą siatkę. Dzięki tej właściwości oraz zdolności żernej (fagocytozie) znajdujących się w węzłach monocytów, oczyszczają limfę z drobnoustrojów i ich toksyn. Zaś dzięki limfocytom namnażającym się w nich, uczestniczą w mechanizmach odpornościowych organizmu. Skupiają się tam, gdzie ma miejsce kontakt ze środowiskiem zewnętrznym. Koncentrują się przy dużych narządach (pod pachami, w pachwinach). Często powiększają się przy śwince, różyczce i innych chorobach. Wielkość węzłów chłonnych waha się od 2-4 do 30 mm (w stanach zapalnych i chorobach). W węzłach dojrzewają białe ciałka krwi, które produkują przeciwciała, a także usuwają szkodliwe dla organizmu ciała obce.
