Luteinizing hormone (LH, also known as lutropin) is a hormone synthesized and secreted by gonadotropes in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. In concert with the other pituitary gonadotropin follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) it is necessary for proper reproductive function:In the female, an acute rise of LH – the LH surge – triggers ovulation. In the male, where LH had also been called Interstitial Cell Stimulating Hormone (ICSH), it stimulates Leydig cell production of testosterone.

Hormon luteinizujący, lutropina - glikoproteinowy hormon gonadotropowy wydzielany przez gonadotropy przedniego płata przysadki mózgowej. Wydzielanie to jest stymulowane przez podwzgórzową luliberynę (GnRH).U samców odpowiedzialna jest za funkcjonowanie komórek śródmiąższowych jąder, które z kolei produkują testosteron. Bywa wówczas nazywany ICSH.Zwiększony poziom testosteronu we krwi hamuje sekrecję gonadoliberyny (LH-RH) oraz hormonu luteinizującego. U samic szczytowe stężenie tego hormonu we krwi podczas ostatnich dni fazy pęcherzykowej cyklu miesiączkowego doprowadza do rozpoczęcia owulacji. Po uwolnieniu się komórki jajowej do jajowodu, hormon luteinizujący odpowiada za luteinizację ciałka żółtego, a następnie za podtrzymanie jego zdolności sekrecyjnych.

Het luteïniserend hormoon (LH) is een geslachtshormoon dat bij de vrouw de eirijping en de eisprong (ovulatie) stimuleert. Na de eisprong stimuleert het de verdere ontwikkeling van het Graafse follikel tot het gele lichaam (corpus luteum). Het gele lichaam ontwikkelt zich tot een hormoonklier, dat hormonen gaat produceren. Deze hormonen zijn progesteron en de oestrogenen (oestradiol en oestron).
