local administrative unit

Generally, a local administrative unit (LAU) is an area of governmental administration below a province, region, state or other major national subdivision. Not all countries will use this term, but it can be descriptively applied anywhere.Specifically, in the European Union (EU), LAUs are basic components of Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) regions. Two levels of Local Administrative Units (LAU) have been defined. The upper LAU level (LAU level 1, formerly NUTS level 4) is defined for the following countries: Czech Republic, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Ireland, Cyprus, Latvia, Lituania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and the United Kingdom. The second LAU level (formerly NUTS level 5) consists of 112,119 municipalities or equivalent units in the 25 EU Member States (2003 situation).

Les Unités Administratives Locales ou en anglais Local Administrative Unit (LAU) sont les composants primaires des régions NUTS qui a été établie par Eurostat. Au niveau local, deux niveaux d' Unités Administratives Locales (LAU) ont été définis:LAU 1: Le niveau LAU supérieur (autrefois NUTS 4) est défini pour la majorité des pays, mais pas pour tous les pays. LAU 2: Le deuxième niveau LAU (autrefois NUTS 5) consiste de communes ou unités équivalentes dans les 25 États Membres de l'UE.

Der Begriff Lokale Gebietseinheit oder englisch (LAU) bezeichnet eine staatliche administrative Hierarchieebene, die unterhalb einer Provinz, Region, Staat oder anderer landestypischer Verwaltungseinheit anzusiedeln ist. Der Begriff wird nicht von jedem Land in dieser Form verwendet, er kann aber dennoch für deskriptive Zwecke eingesetzt werden.

LAU je zkratka anglického Local administrative unit, tedy místní správní jednotka. Oznacuje úroven územní státní správy, která je níže než provincie, kraje a podobné velké správní jednotky.

A local administrative units (nem használt magyar megnevezésével: helyi közigazgatási egységek) az Európai Unió földrajzi alapú statisztikai kódolási rendszerének, a NUTS-nak szoros kiegészítoje. A név 2003-ban, a NUTS-rendszer átdolgozásakor keletkezett, ezzel a névvel illetve a korábbi NUTS 4, illetve NUTS 5 szinten elhelyezkedo adminisztratív egységeket, azaz azokat, melyek az ország közigazgatási hierarchiájában a nagyobb átfogó egységeknél (tartományok, régiók, megyék) alacsonyabban helyezkedik el.
