Litmus is a water-soluble mixture of different dyes extracted from lichens, specially Roccella tinctoria. The mixture has CAS number 1393-92-6. It is often absorbed on to filter paper. The resulting piece of paper or solution with water becomes a pH indicator (one of the oldest), used to test materials for acidity. Blue litmus paper turns red under acidic conditions and red litmus paper turns blue under basic (i.e. alkaline) conditions, the color change occurring over the pH range 4.5-8.3 (at 25°C). Neutral litmus paper is purple in color. The mixture contains 10 to 15 different dyes (Erythrolein (or Erythrolitmin), Azolitmin, Spaniolitmin, Leucoorcein and Leucazolitmin). Pure Azolitmin does show nearly the same effect as litmus.

Le papier de tournesol est un papier utilisé afin de déterminer le pH d'une solution. Il est donc un cas particulier de papier pH. Le papier tournesol devient rouge au contact d'un acide et bleu au contact d'une base. L'extrait de tournesol, d'abord employé comme réactif, fut isolé vers 1300 par l'alchimiste espagnol Arnaud de Villeneuve. L'extrait de poudre de lichen est une découverte des Hollandais au XVIe siècle.

Der Begriff Lackmustest bezeichnete ursprünglich ausschließlich einen in der Chemie gebräuchlichen Test des pH-Werts einer Substanz mit Hilfe des Farbstoffs Lackmus (siehe auch Indikator (Chemie)).Umgangssprachlich wird das Wort inzwischen aber auch zur Beschreibung von Situationen wesentlichen Erkenntnisgewinns außerhalb der Chemie verwandt, etwa in Sätzen wie „Die Verhandlungen über das Klimaschutzabkommen gelten als Lackmustest der europäisch-amerikanischen Beziehungen“.
