Lipophilicity
Lipophilicity, (Gr. fat-liking), refers to the ability of a chemical compound to dissolve in fats, oils, lipids, and non-polar solvents such as hexane or toluene. These non-polar solvents are themselves lipophilic — the axiom that like dissolves like generally holds true. Thus lipophilic substances tend to dissolve in other lipophilic substances, while hydrophilic (water-loving) substances tend to dissolve in water and other hydrophilic substances.

Fettlöslig
Fettlösliga är ämnen som kan lösas upp i organiska, feta lösningsmedel. Ett fettlösligt ämne har vanligtvis ingen eller väldigt liten polär karaktär, och är motsatsen till ett vattenlösligt ämne. Exempel på fettlösliga ämnen är fetter, vissa vitaminer och alkoholer med längre kolkedjor (omkring butanol och uppåt).

Idrofobia
Per idrofobia s'intende la proprietà fisica delle molecole di essere respinte dall'acqua. Il termine deriva dal greco hydros, acqua, e phobos, paura.
Le specie idrofobe o lipofile tendono ad essere elettricamente neutre e apolari, e preferiscono solventi neutrali o apolari e ambienti molecolari. Idrofobico è spesso sostituito con i termini oleoso e lipofilico.
Il termine interazione idrofobica (HI) è stata utilizzata in contesti estremamente correlati a fenomeni legati alle specie idrofobe.

Hydrofoob
Voor een fobie voor water, zie watervrees.
Een chemische stof heet hydrofoob als deze waterafstotend is, of niet of zeer slecht met water te mengen is.
Hydrofobie is een eigenschap van sommige materialen. Hydrofobe materialen zijn waterafstotend. De oorzaak hiervan ligt op moleculair niveau. Water is een polaire verbinding waardoor water zich op moleculair niveau voelt aangetrokken tot andere polaire verbindingen. Tussen water en apolaire verbindingen bestaat dergelijke moleculaire aantrekkingskracht niet en worden de watermoleculen veel sterker aangetrokken tot andere watermoleculen.
