Lignite, often referred to as brown coal, is the lowest rank of coal and used almost exclusively as fuel for steam-electric power generation. It is brownish-black and has a high inherent moisture content, sometimes as high as 66 percent, and very high ash content compared with bituminous coal. It is also a heterogeneous mixture of compounds for which no single structural formula will suffice.

Węgiel brunatny to skała osadowa pochodzenia organicznego roślinnego powstała w trzeciorzędzie w erze kenozoicznej ze szczątków roślin obumarłych bez dostępu powietrza. Zawartość węgla 62-75%. Często stosowany jako paliwo. Jego wartość opałowa waha się od 7,5 do 21 MJ/kg. Węgiel brunatny jest nieodnawialnym źródłem energii.

La lignite è un carbon fossile di formazione relativamente recente, originatosi da foreste del secondario e del terziario. La lignite possiede un'umidità relativa piuttosto elevata, mediamente superiore al 21%, e la sua carbonificazione non è mai del tutto completa, il che la rende un combustibile di limitato pregio. La lignite è stata ampiamente utilizzata in tutta Italia fino agli anni '50 e '60, soprattutto per la produzione di energia elettrica necessaria per la nascente industria italiana. Il suo sfruttamento ha spesso portato a notevoli scempi paesaggistici, ormai quasi completamente abbandonati, grazie alla crescente sensibilità ecologica e territoriale.
