Lightning rod
A lightning rod (US, AUS) or lightning conductor (UK) is a metal rod or metallic object mounted on top of a building, electrically bonded using a wire or electrical conductor to interface with ground or "earth" through an electrode, engineered to protect the building in the event of lightning strike. If lightning targets the building it will preferentially strike the rod and be conducted to ground through the wire, instead of passing through the building, where it could start a fire or cause electrocution.

Blitzableiter
Als Blitzableiter wird eine Einrichtung zum Schutz von Gebäuden vor Blitzeinschlägen bezeichnet. Damit stellt der Blitzableiter einen Teil des Blitzschutzsystemes eines Gebäudes dar.

Paratonnerre
Le paratonnerre est un dispositif inventé en 1752 par Benjamin Franklin. Il était conçu à l'origine afin d'« écouler à la terre le fluide électrique contenu dans le nuage orageux et ainsi empêcher la foudre de tomber ». Depuis ces notions portent le nom d'effet de pointe en électrostatique et de cage de Faraday. Pour construire une protection contre la foudre, il faut construire une cage de Faraday enveloppant l'édifice à protéger.

Åskledare
En åskledare är en anordning som placeras på en byggnads tak och skyddar byggnaden från de skador en blixt ur ett åskväder kan orsaka. Blixten leds ned till en jordledare som sprider laddningen i marken. Benjamin Franklin konstruerade 1752 den första åskledaren. Jordledaren är ofta gjord av koppar, då koppar leder ström mycket bra.

Instalacja odgromowa
Instalacja odgromowa (z ang. LPS - Lightning Protection System, pop. piorunochron) - instalacja chroniąca obiekty przed porażeniami wynikłymi z wyładowań piorunowych. Stosowana najcześciej w budownictiwe mieszkalnym.
Instalacje piorunochronne składają się z:
Każdy ostro zakończony element przewodzący - w szczególności metalowe elementy dachu lub ściany, wystający poza jednolity zarys budynku może stać się naturalnym źródłem wyładowań elektrycznych w zjonizowanym powietrzu. Instalacje odgromowe chronią obiekty mieszkalne oraz ich mieszkańców przed pożarami i porażeniami wywołanymi uderzeniem piorunów. W instalacjach odgromowych stosuje się zwody naturalne, lub w przypadku ich braku - zwody sztuczne poziome lub pionowe. Ich celem jest w przypadku powstania wyładowania piorunowego - jak najszybsze zwiedzenie go ku gruntowi.
