The lift force, lifting force or simply lift is a mechanical force generated by solid objects as they move through a fluid.While many types of objects can generate lift, the most common and familiar object in this category is the airfoil, a relatively flat object of which the common airplane wing is an example. For the sake of simplicity, this article will discuss lift primarily in the context of airfoils and wings.

Mit Auftrieb wird eine Kraft bezeichnet, die eine Flüssigkeit oder ein Gas auf einen Körper (oder auf ein Gasvolumen) ausübt. Eine physikalisch gesehen gleiche Kraft wie der Auftrieb, die aber in die entgegengesetzte Richtung wirkt, nennt man Abtrieb. Man unterscheidet den entgegen der Schwerkraft wirkenden statischen Auftrieb vom rechtwinklig zur Anströmung wirkenden dynamischen Auftrieb.

Siła nośna - siła działająca na ciało poruszające się w płynie, prostopadła do kierunku ruchu. Najbardziej reprezentatywnym przykładem wykorzystania siły nośnej jest siła nośna skrzydła samolotu.Siła nośna działa na skrzydła i usterzenie samolotu (rys.1), łopaty śmigła lub wirnika śmigłowca, na żagiel jachtu, jego ster, kil lub miecz, na łopatki turbin i sprężarek. Działa na lecące pociski i rakiety, określała też tor zejścia przy powrocie kapsuły dowodzenia Apollo. Dodatkowe skrzydła samochodów wyścigowych, wytwarzając siłę nośną skierowaną w dół, powodują zwiększanie docisku do jezdni, zwiększając przyczepność.
