Leukotrienes are naturally produced eicosanoid lipid mediators, which may be responsible for a number of the effects of asthma and allergies. Leukotrienes use both autocrine signalling and paracrine signalling to regulate the body's response. Leukotrienes are produced in the body from arachidonic acid by the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase. Their production by the body is part of a complex response that usually includes the production of histamine.

Les Leucotriènes sont des lipides, appartenant à la famille des éicosanoïdes. On distingue deux classes de leucotriènes : La première constitue les leucotriènes B4, ou LTB4 qui possèdent un rôle chimiotactique pour les leucocytes (macrophages, neutrophiles..) sur les sites de l'inflammation. L'autre classe renferme les LTC4, LTD4, et LTE4 qui ont un rôle dans la broncho-constriction en réponse entre autres à des allergènes (Asthme).

Leukotriene wurden in Leukozyten (weißen Blutkörperchen) entdeckt und sind chemisch von der Arachidonsäure (einer vierfach ungesättigten Fettsäure) abgeleitet. Sie selbst besitzen drei Doppelbindungen und gehören zur Stoffgruppe der Eikosanoide. Ihre Rolle im Stoffwechsel steht im Zusammenhang mit allergischen bzw. entzündlichen Reaktionen des Körpers (z. B. Asthma bronchiale).
