Lepidoptera
Lepidoptera ( ) is a large order of insects that includes moths and butterflies (called lepidopterans). It is one of the most widespread and widely recognizable insect orders in the world, encompassing moths and the three superfamilies of butterflies, skipper butterflies, and moth-butterflies. The term was coined by Linnaeus in 1735 and is derived from Ancient Greek  (scale) and (wing). Comprising an estimated 174,250 species, in 126 families and 46 superfamilies, the Lepidoptera show many variations of the basic body structure that have evolved to gain advantages in lifestyle and distribution. Recent estimates suggest that the order may have more species than earlier thought, and is among the four most orders, along with the Hymenoptera, Diptera, and the Coleoptera.

Schmetterlinge
Die Schmetterlinge (Lepidoptera) oder Falter bilden mit mehr als 180.000 beschriebenen Arten in 127 Familien und 46 Überfamilien nach den Käfern (Coleoptera) die zweitartenreichste Insekten-Ordnung. Jährlich werden etwa 700 Arten neu entdeckt. Schmetterlinge sind auf allen Kontinenten außer der Antarktis verbreitet. In Mitteleuropa sind sie mit etwa 4000 Arten vertreten; für Gesamteuropa verzeichnet der Katalog von Ole Karsholt über 10600 Arten. In Deutschland sind es etwa 3700 Arten.

Fjärilar
Se fjärilsim för simsättet.
Fjärilar (Lepidoptera) är en ordning bland insekterna. Till ordningen räknas alla insekter med två par vingar, mer eller mindre täckta av små så kallade vingfjäll. Nästan alla arter har också sugande mundelar, ofta i form av en ihoprullad snabel. Vissa primitiva fjärilar har käkar. Utöver dem med vingar finns också några arter, där åtminstone honan saknar vingar.

Motyle
Motyle (Lepidoptera - z lepis, dopełniacz lepidos - "łuska" i pteron - "skrzydło"; łuskoskrzydłe) – rząd owadów uskrzydlonych, blisko spokrewniony z chruścikami.

Istnieje kilka umownych podziałów motyli, które nie mają pokrycia w rzeczywistych relacjach pokrewieństwa w obrębie tej grupy. Mogą one być jednak wygodne przy rozpoznawaniu. Dwa często spotykane w książkach czy popularnych atlasach podziały to podział ze względu na wygląd i porę lotu na motyle dzienne = (Rhopalocera, buławkoczułkie) oraz ćmy = (Heterocera , różnoczułkie) oraz podział ze względu na wielkość na Macrolepidoptera (motyle większe) i Microlepidoptera (motyle mniejsze). Oba te podziały są sztuczne, ale można je wykorzystać pamiętając, że np. wiele ciem lata w dzień, niektóre mają buławkowate czułki, niektóre rodziny zaliczane do Macrolepidoptera mają przedstawicieli o bardzo małych rozmiarach (np. Noctuidae) i odwrotnie niektóre rodziny włączane do Microlepidoptera mają przedstawicieli o rozmiarach większych (np. Pyralidae). Należy również pamiętać, że podziały te nakładają się na siebie.
