In botany, a leaf is an above-ground plant organ specialized for photosynthesis. For this purpose, a leaf is typically flat (laminar) and thin, to expose the cells containing chloroplast (chlorenchyma tissue, a type of parenchyma) to light over a broad area, and to allow light to penetrate fully into the tissues. Leaves are also the sites in most plants where respiration, transpiration, and guttation take place. Leaves can store food and water, and are modified in some plants for other purposes. The comparable structures of ferns are correctly referred to as fronds. Furthermore, leaves are prominent in the human diet as leaf vegetables.

La feuille est l'organe spécialisé dans la photosynthèse chez les végétaux supérieurs. Elle est insérée sur les tiges des plantes au niveau des nœuds. À l'aisselle de la feuille se trouve un bourgeon axillaire. C'est aussi le siège de la respiration et de la transpiration. Les feuilles peuvent se spécialiser, notamment pour stocker des éléments nutritifs et de l'eau. Pour accomplir son rôle, une feuille est généralement formée d'une lame plate et fine, le limbe, qui lui permet d'exposer à la lumière un maximum de surface. Mais il existe aussi des feuilles transformées, pour lesquelles le limbe est très réduit (elles sont transformées en vrilles, écailles sur les bourgeons, épines,....) .

Das Blatt (althochdeutsch: plat, gemeingermanisch; lat. (folium) Mehrzahl: Blätter) ist neben der Sprossachse und der Wurzel eines der drei Grundorgane der höheren Pflanzen und wird als Organtyp Phyllom genannt. Blätter sind seitliche Auswüchse an den Knoten (Nodi) der Sprossachse. Die ursprünglichen Funktionen der Blätter sind Photosynthese (Aufbau organischer Stoffe mit Hilfe von Licht) und Transpiration (Wasserverdunstung, wichtig für Nährstoffaufnahme und -transport).

Liść – element budowy części osiowej (pędowej) roślin telomowych. Wyrastające z węzłów końcowe elementy rozgałęzień pędu, wyodrębniające się ze względu na funkcję i budowę od łodygi (nie mają np. zdolności do nieprzerwanego wzrostu). Pełnią głównie funkcje odżywcze i z tego powodu posiadają zwykle dużą powierzchnię umożliwiającą ekspozycję na odpowiednią ilość promieniowania słonecznego. Poza tym liście biorą udział w transpiracji i gutacji oraz wymianie gazowej. Nierzadko liście pełnią także funkcje spichrzowe, czepne, ochronne, obronne i pułapkowe, w takich przypadkach ulegając daleko idącym przystosowaniom w zakresie funkcji i budowy.
