A lawyer, according to Black's Law Dictionary, is "a person learned in the law; as an attorney, counsel or solicitor; a person licensed to practice law." Law is the system of rules of conduct established by the government of a society to maintain stability and justice. Working as a lawyer represents the practical application of legal theory and knowledge to solve real problems or to advance the interests of those who retain (i.e., hire) lawyers for legal services.

L'avocat est un praticien et un professionnel du droit dont la fonction traditionnelle est de conseiller ses clients sur des questions juridiques, qu'elles soient relatives à leur vie juridique quotidienne ou plus spécialisées. L'avocat peut aussi défendre ses clients en justice, en plaidant pour protéger leurs intérêts et, plus généralement, pour les représenter. Rechtsanwalt (im Bereich des Schweizer Rechts (in den Kantonen Basel-Stadt und Basel-Landschaft) auch Advokat, eine in Deutschland veraltet klingende Bezeichnung, oder (im Kanton Bern) Fürsprecher genannt; von germ. rehta, althochdeutsch reht: "richten", anawalt: "Gewalt") ist eine Berufsbezeichnung für einen juristischen Beistand.

Adwokat (łac. advocatus od advocare - wzywać na pomoc) - prawnik udzielający porad prawnych i prowadzący sprawy klientów w sądzie. Może wykonywać swój zawód w zespołach adwokackich lub indywidualnie a także w formie handlowych spółek osobowych. Kandydat na adwokata musi ukończyć wyższe studia prawnicze, odbyć aplikację adwokacką - praktykę w adwokaturze oraz zdać egzamin adwokacki. Osoby posiadające tytuł naukowy profesora lub stopień naukowy doktora habilitowanego w dziedzinie prawa są zwolnieni z konieczności odbycia aplikacji i zdawania egzaminu adwokackiego.

Een advocaat is een raadsman of raadsvrouw in juridische aangelegenheden. Anders dan een notaris, die meestal voor twee partijen werkzaam is, is de advocaat als belangenbehartiger altijd partijdig.
