Law is a system of social rules usually enforced through a set of structured institutions. Law affects everyday life and society in a variety of ways. Contract law regulates everything from buying a bus ticket to trading swaptions on a derivatives market. Property law defines rights and obligations related to buying, selling, or renting real property such as homes and buildings. Trust law applies to assets held for investment, such as pension funds. Tort law allows claims for compensation when someone or their property is harmed. If the harm is criminalised in a penal code, criminal law offers means by which the state prosecutes and punishes the perpetrator. Constitutional law provides a framework for creating laws, protecting people's human rights, and electing political representatives. administrative law relates to the activities of administrative agencies of government. Government agency action can include rulemaking, adjudication, or the enforcement of a specific regulatory agenda. International law regulates affairs between sovereign nation-states in everything from trade to the environment to military action. "The rule of law", wrote the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle in 350 BCE, "is better than the rule of any individual."

Nozione Rispondere alla domanda "che cos’è il diritto", ha impegnato gli studiosi di tutte le epoche, e costituisce ancora un problema aperto, la cui soluzione dipende in gran parte dal quadro filosofico cui ogni studioso fa riferimento.Una delle concezioni più risalenti è la c.d. teoria del diritto naturale, o giusnaturalismo. Tale teoria postula l’esistenza di una serie di princìpi eterni e immutabili, inscritti nella natura umana, cui si dà il nome di diritto naturale. Il diritto positivo (cioè il diritto effettivamente vigente) non sarebbe altro che la traduzione in norme di quei princìpi. Il metodo adottato dal legislatore è dunque un metodo deduttivo: da princìpi universali si ricavano (per deduzione) le norme particolari. Il problema è che non sempre vi è pieno accordo su quali siano i princìpi universali ispiratori delle norme giuridiche. Alcune Chiese, ma, per es., anche le consorterie massoniche, principali assertrici del diritto naturale, tendono ad identificarlo con i princìpi dettati dai loro testi sacri (la Bibbia, il Corano, etc.) o manifesti ideologici illuminati: gli studiosi laici con princìpi diversi (di giustizia, equità, il popolo, lo stato etc.). Non essendoci sempre accordo sui princìpi-base (a meno che essi non siano imposti da un potere autoritario), per alcuni viene a cadere il fondamento stesso della teoria del diritto naturale.
