The languages of the European Union are languages used by people within the member states of the European Union. They include the twenty-three official languages of the European Union along with a range of others. The EU asserts on its Europa homepage: "Languages: Europe's asset" and has a European Commissioner for Multilingualism, Leonard Orban.

In der Europäischen Union werden 23 Sprachen als Amts- und Arbeitssprachen anerkannt. Dies wurde durch die erste Verordnung festgelegt, die überhaupt von der EWG erlassen wurde (Text der VO 1/1958 siehe unten). Sie beruht auf Artikel 290 des EGV (Vertrag zur Gründung der Europäischen Gemeinschaft), wo es heißt: "Die Regelung der Sprachenfrage für die Organe der Gemeinschaft wird unbeschadet der Verfahrensordnung des Gerichtshofs vom Rat einstimmig getroffen."

Na terenie Unii Europejskiej 23 języki mają status języka oficjalnego.W 2007 roku taki status uzyskał język irlandzki, który w samej Irlandii został wyparty przez angielski na skutek tego, że większość ludności opuściła ten kraj, a reszta wymieszała się z osobami anglojęzycznymi. Jednakże za tłumaczenia będzie płacił rząd Irlandii, gdyż bardzo mało osób posługuje się irlandzkim jako pierwszym językiem, a w szkołach naucza się go wszystkich tak jak martwej łaciny.

Le lingue dell'Unione Europea sono le lingue usate dagli abitanti degli Stati Membri dell'Unione Europea. Attualmente le lingue ufficiali dell'Unione Europea sono 23, dal 1 gennaio 2007 si sono aggiunte il bulgaro, il rumeno e l'irlandese. Sulla pagina iniziale del sito dell'UE [1] vi si afferma: "Lingue: la ricchezza dell'Europa" titolando una sezione particolare tutta dedicata a questo argomento [2].
