Lan
Lan (in English lan; in Latin laneus, in German Lahn), in Polish means "field," and is a unit of land measurement used in Poland. Since the 13th century, its value has varied from one location to another. A Franconian lan consisted of 43.2 morgs = 23 to 28 hectares. The term lan was also used to indicate a full-sized farm, as opposed to one split up into a number of smaller sections. In medieval times its value was anywhere between 3 and 50 hectares, but from the 13th century to 1857 in Great Lesser Poland (with Podkarpacie), the Franconian Lan was consistently used.

The defining characteristics of LANs, in contrast to wide area networks (WANs), include their usually higher data-transfer rates, smaller geographic area, and lack of a need for leased telecommunication lines.
