Labyrinth
In Greek mythology, the Labyrinth (Greek λαβύρινθος labyrinthos, "place of the double-axe," possibly the building complex at Knossos) was an elaborate structure designed and built by the legendary artificer Daedalus for King Minos of Crete at Knossos. Its function was to hold the Minotaur, a mythical creature that was half man and half bull and was eventually killed by the Athenian hero Theseus. Daedalus had made the Labyrinth so cunningly that he himself could barely escape it after he built it. Theseus was aided by Ariadne, who provided him with a skein of thread, literally the "clew", or "clue", so he could find his way out again.

Labyrinth
Labyrinth bezeichnet ein System von Linien oder Wegen, das durch zahlreiche Richtungsänderungen ein Verfolgen oder Abschreiten des Musters zu einem Rätsel macht. Labyrinthe können als Bauwerk, Ornament, Mosaik, Pflanzung (Hecken-Irrgarten und Maislabyrinth), als Zeichnung oder Felsritzung ausgeführt sein. Auch in gedruckter Form existieren Abbildungen labyrinthischer Muster. Darüber hinaus wird der Begriff im übertragenen Sinne verwendet, um einen Sachverhalt als verworren oder schwierig zu kennzeichnen.

Le terme labyrinthe vient du grec , (en latin labyrinthus), mot dont l'étymologie est douteuse. Il désigne dans la mythologie grecque une série complexe de galeries construites par Dédale pour enfermer le Minotaure.

Labirynt
Labirynt (gr. labyrinthos) jest to ciąg korytarzy, w którym trudno znaleźć wyjście. Używany czasami w matematyce i w logice. Słowo labirynt jest właściwie niegreckiego pochodzenia, często uważa się, że pochodzi od przedgreckiego (pelazgijskiego) słowa labrys, które oznaczało obusieczny topór.
Znany jest już od najstarszych czasów; stosowano go w Starożytnej Mezopotamii i Starożytnym Egipcie; użyty był w królewskich grobowcach - piramidach. Najsłynniejszy labirynt została jednak zbudowany przez Dedala i znajdował się w pałacu w Knossos, na Krecie - w nim, według greckiego mitu, uwięziony był potwór Minotaur. To właśnie topory miały się znajdować w komnacie króla Minosa, w Knossos - stąd tę komnatę, a także cały pałac nazwano labyrinthos, czyli dom obusiecznych toporów. Pałac ma bardzo skomplikowany układ wielu pomieszczeń, dlatego też dziś używamy tej nazwy w stosunku do równie skomplikowanych budowli.
