Labialization is a secondary articulatory feature of sounds in some languages. Labialized sounds involve the lips while the remainder of the oral cavity produces another sound. The term is normally restricted to consonants. When vowels involve the lips, they are called rounded.

Labialisierung
Unter Labialisierung (auch: Rundung) bezeichnet man in der Phonetik sowohl den Vorgang der Sekundärartikulation als auch den auf Lippenrundung zurückgehenden Lautwandel (siehe: Diachronie). So sind die gerundeten Vorderzungenvokale der neuhochdeutschen Sprache durch Labialisierung entstanden. Aus dem mittelhochdeutschen Wort leffel wurde Löffel.

Labialisation
La labialisation est un trait d'articulation secondaire des sons d'une langue, le plus souvent utilisé pour les consonnes. La labialisation, en termes simples, repose sur l'utilisation des lèvres comme dispositif secondaire d'articulation, pendant que le reste de la bouche produit un autre phonème.

Labializacja
Labializacja (od łac. labialis wargowy) - zjawisko zaokrąglenia warg przy artykulacji samogłosek lub spółgłosek. Obecna np. w pewnych dialektach polskich (np. małopolskim, śląskim oraz wielkopolskim - zaznaczana w nagłosie przez u, bądź częściej ł), językach kaukaskich, języku praindoeuropejskim.

Labializacja to również pewien proces asymilacji (Głoski stają się zaokrąglone w otoczeniu głosek z natury zaokrąglonych, np. [k] > [kʷ] pod wpływem [o]; [a] > [o] pod wpływem [p] lub [kʷ].), który zaszedł np. w językach abchasko-adygijskich i niektórych językach australijskich. W jego wyniku powstał szereg spółgłosek labializowanych, a liczba samogłosek ograniczyła się nawet do dwóch.
