Labas is a word in
Lithuanian that means good and is usually used in
greeting. Together with a word describing the time of day, it forms a formal greeting: labas rytas is the phrase for good morning, laba diena is good day, and labas vakaras is good evening. It is also used in some goodbye phrases: labos nakties is the phrase for have a good night and viso labo is the phrase meaning wish you everything good. When used alone, labas is an informal Hi. However,
Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus, who used to live outside of Lithuania for an extended period of time, started to use this form even in formal meetings.
