is a Japanese word that is used in association with the ancient Japanese martial arts. This word literally translates as " " (ko—old, ryu—school) or "traditional school". Koryu is a general term for Japanese schools of martial arts that predate the Meiji Restoration (the period from 1866 to 1869 which sparked major socio-political changes and led to the modernization of Japan). While there is no "official" cutoff date, the dates most commonly used are either 1868, the first year of the Meiji period, or 1876, when the Haitorei edict banning the wearing of swords was pronounced.

Kōryū Tadaharu (光龍 忠晴, born 4 February 1984) is a Mongolian former sumo wrestler from Ulan Bator. His highest rank was maegashira 11. He was forced to retire from sumo in 2011 after being found guilty of match-fixing.

Kobudō (古武道), kobujutsu (古武術) eller koryū budō (古流武道) är benämningar på japansk stridskonst (budo) med härkomst före 1868. I motsats till vad många västerlänningar tror så innehåller kobudo (eller kobujutsu) inte nödvändigtvis några vapen. I Japan ser man ingen skillnad mellan kobujutsu och kobudō. I västvärlden associeras ofta båda dessa begrepp med vapenskolorna på Ryukyu-öarna vid Okinawa. Ett samlingsnamn för dem är Ryukyu kobujutsu. Även om några av de skolorna klassificeras som koryū så innehåller begreppet kobudō betydligt mer. De traditionella skolorna från japanska fastlandet lär mycket sällan ut tekniker med vapen som sai, tonfa och nunchaku, vilket annars är karakteristiskt för Ryukyu-stilarna. En stor del av den japanska jujutsun kategoriseras som kobudō.
