The knowledge economy is a term that refers either to an economy of knowledge focused on the production and management of knowledge in the frame of economic constraints, or to a knowledge-based economy. In the second meaning, more frequently used, it refers to the use of knowledge technologies (such as knowledge engineering  and knowledge management) to produce economic benefits as well as job creation. The phrase was popularized by Peter Drucker as the title of Chapter 12 in his book The Age of Discontinuity, And, with a footnote in the text, Drucker attributes the phrase to economist Fritz Machlup and its origins to the idea of "scientific management" developed by Frederick Winslow Taylor.

Die Informationsökonomie bildet neben den traditionellen volkswirtschaftlichen Sektoren Landwirtschaft, Industrie und Dienstleistungen einen vierten Sektor. Die zentrale Ressource bzw. der zentrale Produktionsfaktor ist die von einem physischen Gut unabhängige Information, daher auch die Bezeichnung als Informationssektor. Informationsökonomie wird auch als wirtschaftliche Dimension der Informationsgesellschaft angesehen.

Les expressions économie du savoir, capitalisme cognitif, économie de la connaissance ou encore économie de l'immatériel, en débordant l'aspect économique société de la connaissance, désignent ce qui serait une nouvelle phase de l'histoire économique dans laquelle, selon certains économistes, nous sommes entrés depuis la fin du siècle dernier (années 1990).

Kenniseconomie (ook wel informatiemaatschappij) is een vrij abstract begrip uit de economie waarmee wordt bedoeld dat een significant deel van de economische groei in de samenleving voortkomt uit (technische) kennis. Het is een maatschappij waarin de productiefactor kennis een steeds belangrijkere plaats in neemt ten opzichte van arbeid, natuur en kapitaal (de drie traditionele productiefactoren). Dit past binnen de algemene verschuiving van arbeid in de landbouw via industrie naar diensten.

Экономика знаний - экономика ежедневной технологической революции. Тесно связана с постиндустриальной экономикой, а потому в наибольшей степени характерна для развитых стран США и Западной Европы. Достаточно заметно прогрессирует в последние несколько лет в России и некоторых других странах СНГ и Балтии. Для постиндустриальной экономики характерно резкое ускорение научно-технического прогресса, преобладание отраслей, связанных с информационно-коммуникационными технологиями и, как следствие, изменение структуры общества и образа жизни человека. Соответствующее такой экономике общество - общество знаний - характеризуется выской степенью развития творческого потенциала личности.
