In chess, the King (♔ ♚) is the most important piece. The object of the game is to capture the opponent's king. If a player's king is threatened with capture, it is said to be in check, and the player must move so as to remove the threat of capture. If it cannot escape capture on the next move, the king is said to be in checkmate, and the player which owns that king loses the game.

Le roi (♔ U+2654 ♚ U+265A) est la pièce clé du jeu d'échecs. Si le roi d'un joueur est menacé et ne peut échapper à la capture, le roi est dit échec et mat, et le joueur qui possède ce roi perd la partie.

Der König (Unicode: ♔ ♚) ist die wichtigste Figur beim Schachspiel, da es Ziel des Spiels ist, den gegnerischen König matt zu setzen – was die Partie sofort beendet. Matt setzen heißt, den gegnerischen König mit einer (oder mehreren) Figur(en) zu bedrohen, ohne dass die Bedrohung abgewehrt werden kann durch Wegziehen des Königs auf ein unbedrohtes Feld, Schlagen der angreifenden Figur oder Dazwischenziehen einer Figur. Als besondere (allerdings nicht sehr verbreitete) Geste, dass man verloren hat oder aufgibt, kann man den eigenen König auf dem Schachbrett umwerfen bzw. umlegen.

Król – figura w szachach. Król jest specyficzną figurą, ponieważ zasadniczym celem przeciwnika jest jego osaczenie. W tradycyjnym początkowym ustawieniu bierek król znajduje się pomiędzy hetmanem i królewskim gońcem, na pierwszej (ósmej) linii. W notacji algebraicznej król białych znajduje się na polu e1, król czarnych na e8.

Il Re è un pezzo del  gioco degli scacchi. Ogni giocatore comincia la partita con il Re posizionato tra la Donna e l'Alfiere di Re. In notazione algebrica vuol dire che il Re bianco si trova sulla casa e1 e il Re nero sta sulla casa e8. Il Re rappresenta il premio che l'avversario cerca di vincere. Se il Re è minacciato e non può sottrarsi alla cattura in nessun modo (spostandosi, catturando il pezzo che lo minaccia o intromettendo un suo pezzo fra lui ed il pezzo dell'avversario che lo minaccia) viene dichiarato lo Scacco Matto e si perde la partita. Ogni qualvolta il Re è sotto minaccia viene dichiarato lo Scacco ed il giocatore (sotto scacco) è obbligato a rimediare immediatamente a questa situazione.
