The kilogram or kilogramme (symbol: kg) is the SI base unit of mass. The kilogram is defined as being equal to the mass of the International Prototype Kilogram (IPK), which is almost exactly equal to the mass of one liter of water. It is the only SI base unit with an SI prefix as part of its name. It is also the only SI unit that is still defined in relation to an artifact rather than to a fundamental physical property that can be reproduced in different laboratories.

Das Kilogramm ist die SI-Basiseinheit der Masse. Das Einheitenzeichen des Kilogramm ist kg.Es ist in mehrfacher Hinsicht eine besondere Einheit. Es ist die einzige SI-Basiseinheit, die nur durch einen Vergleichsgegenstand (Prototyp), das Urkilogramm, festgelegt ist. Der Einheitenname des Kilogramm beginnt mit dem SI-Vorsatz „Kilo“ (v. griech.: chilioi „tausend“); deshalb dürfen dezimale Teile und Vielfache des Kilogramm nicht vom Kilogramm ausgehend mit Vorsätzen oder Vorsatzzeichen gebildet werden, stattdessen leitet man sie vom Gramm ab, das – nach SI-Regeln und Normung – nicht als Millikilogramm bezeichnet werden darf. Ursprünglich hieß das Kilogramm Grave.

Kilogram - jednostka masy, jednostka podstawowa układu SI, oznaczana kg. Jest to masa międzynarodowego wzorca (walca o wysokości i średnicy podstawy 39 mm wykonanego ze stopu platyny z irydem) przechowywanego w Międzynarodowym Biurze Miar w Sèvres koło Paryża. Wzorzec kilograma został usankcjonowany uchwałą I Generalnej Konferencji Miar (Conférence Générale des Poids et Mesures, CGPM) w 1889. Jest to obecnie jedyna jednostka podstawowa posiadająca przedrostek (kilo), jak również jedyna, dla której podstawą definicji jest określony przedmiot, a nie odwołanie się do stałych fizycznych. Dawniej za wzorzec był przyjmowany jeden litr wody o temperaturze czterech stopni Celsjusza przy ciśnieniu normalnym. W 1901 r. z kolei 3. Konfrencja zmieniła definicję litra na objętość jaką zajmuje 1 kilogram wody destylowanej w temperaturze 3,98 °C przy ciśnieniu 1 atm = 760 mm Hg (1013,25 hPa). Zależności między litrem i kilogramem usunięto w 1964 r., na 12. Konferencji. Pojawiają się propozycje, aby wzorzec kilograma oprzeć na stałych fizycznych (masie określonej liczby atomów konkretnego izotopu), ale na razie taka definicja zapewniłaby mniejszą dokładność wzorca, ponieważ pomiar masy za pomocą wagi jest dokładniejszy niż możliwość policzenia atomów.
