A ketone (pronounced as key tone) is either the functional group characterized by a carbonyl group (O=C) linked to two other carbon atoms or a chemical compound that contains this functional group. A ketone can be generally represented by the formula:R1(CO)R2.A carbonyl carbon bonded to two carbon atoms distinguishes ketones from carboxylic acids, aldehydes, esters, amides, and other oxygen-containing compounds. The double-bond of the carbonyl group distinguishes ketones from alcohols and ethers. The simplest ketone is acetone (systematically named 2-propanone).

Une cétone est un composé organique, faisant partie de la famille des composés carbonylés, dont l'un des carbones porte un groupement carbonyle. Les aldéhydes ont un carbone primaire et les cétones un carbone secondaire (lié à exactement 2 atomes de carbones voisins) qui porte le groupement carbonyle. Une cétone contient donc la séquence : où R1 et R2 sont des chaînes carbonées, et pas de simples atomes d'hydrogène

Ketone sind chemische Verbindungen, die als funktionelle Gruppe eine nicht endständige Carbonylgruppe (>C=O) (auch Ketogruppe genannt) enthalten. Das bedeutet (siehe Bild): im Gegensatz zu den Aldehyden ist der Carbonylkohlenstoff bei den Ketonen mit zwei weiteren Kohlenstoffatomen verbunden.Ketone sind Oxidationsprodukte sekundärer Alkohole. Die von den Alkanen ableitbaren Ketone nennt man auch Alkanone. Einfachstes Keton ist das Aceton (Propanon oder Dimethylketon).Verwendet werden Ketone in der Chemie, der Medizin (siehe [1]) und in der Parfüm-Herstellung.

Ketony to związki posiadające grupę karbonylową, do której z obu stron są przyłączone grupy węglowodorowe. Proste ketony, będące monokarbonylowymi pochodnymi alkanów, noszą nazwę alkanony i mają wzór ogólny CnH2n+2CO.Gdy wymienimy w tym wzorze jedną z grup R na atom wodoru, to otrzymamy kolejną grupę związków o nazwie aldehydy, która ma bardzo zbliżone własności chemiczne do ketonów. Ketony z niewielkimi grupami alkilowymi są cieczami, które dobrze mieszają się zarówno z wodą, jak i z rozpuszczalnikami organicznymi. Ketony są związkami bardzo polarnymi i jednocześnie dość niereaktywnymi, dlatego są często stosowane jako rozpuszczalniki i dodatki do zmywaczy farb.
