, meaning "the method, or technique, of the sword." This is opposed to kendo, which means the way of the sword. Kenjutsu, which originated with the samurai class of feudal Japan, is the umbrella term for all traditional (koryu) schools of Japanese swordsmanship, in particular those that predate the Meiji Restoration and the modern styles of Kendo and Iaido that emerged from the traditional schools in the late 19th century.

Kenjutsu (jap. 剣術) bedeutet „Schwert-Künste“ und wird oft als Oberbegriff für die traditionellen Schwertschulen Japans gehandhabt, aus denen sich unter anderem das moderne Kendō entwickelt hat. Praktizierende des Kenjutsu heißen Kenshi (剣士).

Le kenjutsu (剣術, littéralement « technique du sabre », c'est-à-dire escrime) est un art martial japonais ancien (bujutsu), qui se concentre sur la maîtrise des sabres katana et wakizashi. Enseigné aux samouraï, il faisait partie des bujutsu du Japon féodal.

Kenjutsu (ken-jutsu) ( jap. 剣術) jest jedną z klasycznych japońskich sztuk walki, tzw. koryu budo. Istniało wiele różnych szkół szermierki japońskim mieczem Nihon-to. Przedmiotem nauczania tych szkół było skuteczne władanie mieczem w realnej walce.

Umiejętności te można podzielić na trzy główne kierunki:

• itto-ryu – szkoła walki jednym mieczem (długim), zwanym katana lub tachi 
• kodachi-ryu – szkoła walki jednym mieczem (krótkim, zwanym wakizashi)
• nito-ryu – szkoła walki dwoma mieczami jednocześnie (krótkim i długim).

Innym dodatkowym kierunkiem był nito-ken (inna nazwa nito-kodachi).Polegała ona na walce dwoma wakizashi.

Il Kenjutsu è un'arte marziale giapponese costituita dall'insieme delle tecniche di katana utilizzate durante i combattimenti corpo a corpo; si differenzia dallo Iaido perché le tecniche vengono eseguite solo dopo l'estrazione della spada dal fodero, mentre nello Iaido tutte le sequenze di tecniche (kata) vengono eseguite fin dall'estrazione dell'arma (Iai vuol dire infatti estrazione in giapponese).
