I: v.t.: 1. a reţine (pe cineva) acasă, a împiedica să iasă (din casă) It was only the rain that kept him in on that unforgettable Sunday. ‘What could keep him in so long, I wonder?' 2. a ţine la arest, a consemna. He was told to keep them in until further notice. The form master kept Nick in because he got a lot of bad marks. 3. a întreţine (focul, etc.) She felt cold and asked him to put more logs on fire to keep it in over the night. 4. a-şi menţine (forma, etc.) John used to play tennis every day to keep him in for the European Championships. II: v.i.: 1. (d. persoane) a rămâne acasă. The weather was too cold for that time of the year so that he decided to keep in. Mike kept in that day although his friends asked him for an outing. 2. (d. foc) a rămâne aprins. The fire kept in all that rainy night. As the room was quite dark, the light kept in all the time.
