Ceiba pentandra is a tropical tree of the order Malvales and the family Malvaceae (previously separated in the family Bombacaceae), native to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, northern South America, and (as the variety C. pentandra var. guineensis) to tropical west Africa. Kapok is the most used common name for the tree and may also refer to the fibre obtained from its seed pods. The tree is also known as the Java cotton, Java kapok, Silk cotton or ceiba. It is a sacred symbol in Maya mythology.

Kapok (von malaisch kapuk), auch Pflanzendaunen genannt, ist die Hohlfaser des Kapokbaumes (Ceiba pentandra). Sie stammt aus den langen Fasern der Früchte des in den Tropen wachsenden Baumes. Die Faser selbst ist glatt, transparent mit großem Lumen und dünner Zellwand. Die durchschnittliche Länge der Faser beträgt 19 mm, die durchschnittliche Faserbreite ist 19 µm.

Der Kapokbaum (Ceiba pentandra), auch als Wollbaum bezeichnet, ist eine Pflanzenart aus der Gattung Ceiba in der Unterfamilie der Wollbaumgewächse (Bombacoideae).

Le kapok, en malais kapuk, est une fibre végétale que l'on tire de fruits de plusieurs arbres de la famille des Bombacaceae. On utilise plus particulièrement ceux de Ceiba pentandra, le kapokier (aussi appelé « fromager »), un grand arbre des zones tropicales, originaire de Java. Ceux de Bombax ceiba, un autre fromager, peuvent également être employés.

Det svenska namnet stavas ibland kapock.
