kantele

A kantele (, from Finnish) or kannel (, Finnish variant or from Estonian) is a traditional plucked string instrument of the zither family. It is related to the Russian gusli, the Latvian kokle and the Lithuanian kanklės. Together these instruments make up the family known as Baltic Psalteries. The oldest forms of kantele have 5 or 6 horsehair strings and a wooden body carved from one piece, more modern instruments have metal strings and often a body made from several pieces. Modern concert kanteles can have up to 39 strings. Modern instruments with 15 or fewer strings are generally more closely modelled on traditional shapes than the concert kantele, and form a separate category of instrument known as small kantele. The playing positions of concert kantele and small kantele are reversed, ie to the player of a small kantele the longest low pitched strings are furthest away from his body, whilst to a concert kantele this side of the instrument is nearest, and the short high pitched strings furthest away. The instruments have different though related repertoires.

Die Kantele (, Finnisch) oder Kannel (, Finnisch und Estnisch) ist ein traditionelles Zupfinstrument in Finnland, Estland und Karelien. Sie besteht in der klassischen Form aus einem flügelförmigen Resonanzkörper aus Holz, der aus einem ausgebrannten und mit dem Beil ausgehöhlten Birkenstamm besteht. Auf diesem sind fünf pentatonisch gestimmte Rosshaarsaiten angebracht. Bis zur Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts wandte man diese Methode an. Moderne Kantelen haben bis zu 36 Drahtsaiten, die während des Spiels mit Hilfe eines Hebelsystems um einen Halbton höher oder tiefer gestimmt werden können. Das Instrument wird – ähnlich wie die Zither – auf dem Schoß oder auf einem kleinen Tisch liegend mit den Fingern gespielt. Teilweise wird auch ein Plektrum genutzt.

Il kantele o kannel è uno strumento a corde tipico delle nazioni affacciate sul Mar Baltico. In Finlandia è lo strumento musicale nazionale.Nella versione originale del kantele ci sono solo cinque corde collegate da un manico di legno scavato al corpo, che è aperto nella parte inferiore. Successivamente il kantele è stato sviluppato a tal punto da diventare una famiglia a sé di strumenti musicali, comprendendo particolari soluzioni acustiche e anche modelli elettrici.
