Born in or near Benares, there is a mystery about his family background. However, in early life he became a disciple of the celebrated Hindu ascetic, Râmânanda, who brought to Northern India the religious revival which Râmânuja, the great twelfth-century reformer of Hinduism had initiated in the South. A Bhakti saint, a contemporary of Guru Nanak Dev, who sang the ideals of seeing all of humanity as one, and also the path of natural oneness with God; some even believe him to be the preceptor of Guru Nanak. His Baani is registered in the holy book of Sikhs, Guru Granth Sahib. He was known to be a weaver and later became famed for scorning religious affiliation. His philosophies and ideas of loving devotion to God are expressed in metaphor and language from both the Hindu Vedanta and Bhakti streams using vernacular Hindi. Kabir is also considered one of the early northern India Sants. He was initiated by Ramananda. Kabîr (कबीर) est un poète, philosophe et réformateur religieux vishnouite majeur de l'Inde du nord, né à Vârânasî vers 1398 et décédé à Gorakhpur dans les années 1440 (N.B. : les dates concernant sa vie sont discutées, certaines sources donnent comme dates vers 1440 pour sa naissance et 1518 pour son décès, de même un grand nombre d'évènements ne sont connus que par le légendes transmises par ses disciples.)

Kabir (Hindi, कबीर, , * 1440; † 1518 in Maghar) war ein indischer Mystiker, der das Ideal einer einigen Menschheit vertrat. Er war Weber und wurde durch die konsequente Ächtung religiöser Abgrenzung, wie sie in der geistigen Elite der Moslems und der Hindus seiner Region weit verbreitet war, berühmt. In seine monistische Philosophie von einem einzigen Ursprung aller Dinge und der liebevollen Demut zu Gott flossen Ideen aus dem Vedanta und der Bhakti des Hinduismus mit ein als auch aus dem Sufismus (islamische Mystik).

Kabir (ur. 1440, zm. 1518) - średniowieczny indyjski mistyk i święty sikhizmu oraz sufizmu. Był autorem części księgi Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Skupiał się na jednoczeniu religii hinduistycznej i islamskiej. Surowo sprzeciwiał się nietolerancji i konfliktom na tle religijnym. Wśród zwolenników miał zarówno hinduistów jak i muzułmanów.

Kabir (ou Kabira) (hindi: कबीर, urdu: کبير‎) (1440—1518) foi um dos grandes poetas místicos ou santos-poetas da Índia medieval, tendo composto poemas que evidenciam a fusão entre o movimento de bhakti hindu e o sufismo muçulmano, movimentos religiosos que exercem profunda influência cultural em todo o mundo até os nossos dias.
