Jurisprudence is the study and theory of law. Scholars of jurisprudence, or legal theorists (including legal philosophers and social theorists of law), hope to obtain a deeper understanding of the nature of law, of legal reasoning, legal systems and of legal institutions. Modern jurisprudence began in the 18th century and was focused on the first principles of the natural law, civil law, and the law of nations. General jurisprudence can be broken into categories both by the type of question scholars seek to answer and by the theories of jurisprudence, or schools of thought, regarding how those questions are best answered. Contemporary philosophy of law, which deals with general jurisprudence, addresses problems in two rough groups:

• 1.) Problems internal to law and legal systems as such.
• 2.) Problems of law as a particular social institution as it relates to the larger political and social situation in which it exists.

Die Rechtsphilosophie ist ein Teilgebiet der Philosophie und gleichzeitig eine Grundlagendisziplin der Rechtswissenschaft. Sie beschäftigt sich mit den grundlegenden Fragen des Rechts. Rechtsphilosophische Fragestellungen sind beispielsweise:

• Was ist Recht?
• In welchem Verhältnis stehen „Gerechtigkeit“ und „Recht“ zueinander?
• In welchem Verhältnis stehen Rechtsnormen zu anderen  sozialen Normen, insbesondere zur Moral?
• Welchen Inhalt sollte das Recht haben?
• Wie entstehen Rechtsnormen?
• Was ist der Grund für die Geltung des Rechts? (Verbindlichkeit)
• In welchem Verhältnis stehen „Rechtsgefühl“ und „Recht“ zueinander?

La jurisprudence désigne l'ensemble des décisions rendues par les Hautes juridictions nationales (, , ), par les juridictions internationales (Cour européenne des droits de l'homme, Cour de justice des Communautés européennes...) mais aussi par les autres juridictions ( et tribunaux).

La philosophie du droit (ou théorie du droit) est l'étude et l'analyse des concepts et principes fondamentaux du droit et des lois. Discipline située à l'intersection entre philosophie, études juridiques et sciences politiques, elle est désignée, en anglais, sous le nom de « jurisprudence » ou de « legal theory ». Parmi les principaux courants de la théorie du droit, on peut citer le positivisme juridique, dont Hans Kelsen (1881-1973) a fourni les titres de noblesse, le jusnaturalisme (Ronald Dworkin), le réalisme (le juge Oliver Holmes aux Etats-Unis ou Axel Hägerström en Suède), qui se rapproche parfois de la sociologie du droit, en mettant l'accent sur les pratiques effectives des acteurs juridiques. En France, la discipline est représentée en particulier par Michel Villey (1914-1988), Michel Troper ou Jean-François Kervégan.

Rättsfilosofi är en inriktning inom  filosofin och rättsvetenskapen, där grundläggande frågeställningar som "vad är gällande rätt?", "är makt detsamma som rätt?" och "vilken är skillnaden mellan rätt och moral?" studeras. Ämnet förgrenar sig i tre huvudsakliga delar:

• Naturrätt är idén om att det existerar oföränderliga naturlagar som styr oss, och att våra institutioner bör vara kompatibla med dessa lagar.
• Analytisk jurisprudens ställer frågor som, "Vad är en lag?" "Vilka är kriterierna för juridisk legitimitet?" och "Vilket är förhållandet mellan lag och moral?".
• Normativ jurisprudens ställer frågor om hur lagen bör se ut. Den överlappar både moral- och politisk filosofi och innefattar frågor om huruvida man bör följa lagen, på vilka grunder lagbrytar bör straffas med fler.

Prawoznawstwo, inaczej jurysprudencja (w piśmiennictwie określana też jako doktryna prawa lub nauka prawa) jest jedną z nauk społecznych, zajmującą się prawem. Jest to obszerna dziedzina wiedzy o tworzeniu i funkcjonowaniu prawa oraz jego stosowaniu. Nazwa „jurysprudencja” wywodzi się od łacińskiego słowa iurisprudentia (ius,iuris - prawo; prudentia - wiedza), bywa niekiedy stosowana w węższym zakresie w odniesieniu do orzecznictwa sądowego.
